History
There has been Christian nonconformist worship on the site of the church for over 300 years.
The first church on the site was established in 1697 in a converted barn, a licence having been granted by the Pontefract Sessions for the barn to serve as a place of worship.
A purpose-built church was erected in 1797 and was said to be capable of seating 260 persons.
In 1864 it was decided that this building was unsuitable for the steady increase in the size of the congregation and after much consideration it was decided to build a new Church. That is the present building, which has been considerably improved and refurbished through a three-phase plan over the past fifteen years, making it suitable for varied styles of worship suited to the 21st century.
We are a congregation of the United Reformed Church, which was formed in 1972 by the union of the Congregation Union and the Presbyterian Church. The ministry and functions of the church are the responsibility of the Minister and the Elders.
